What Does a Personal Trainer Do?
If you’re new to personal training, you might be wondering what exactly a personal trainer does and how one could help you.
Briefly, a personal trainer is trained to help you reach your goals efficiently and minimize the risk of injury while doing it.
As a personal trainer, I have extensive training in kinesiology, psychology, and rehab modalities, including a BA from Chapman University, plus certifications in sports medicine, physical fitness, behavior management, and psychology. Read more about me here.
Helping Your Reach Your Goals
All of this education gives me the ability to assess where you are and devise the most direct route to where you want to be. I don’t just coach my clients in the gym. I’ll give you suggestions for what kinds of exercise to do on your “off” days. I also make suggestions about diet so you can eat in a way that supports your goals.
A lot of times people have misguided ideas about how to lose weight, gain strength, etc. For example, a lot people do not push themselves hard enough in the gym. I’m not out to work anyone to death, but you need to challenge yourself with the weights you lift if you want to see continual progress.
Preventing Injuries
Another main function of a personal trainer is to teach you proper form. Without the proper form, you are at a higher risk of injury, which could set your training back for weeks, months, or even longer.
For example, there are a lot of exercise involving the core where it is critical to not engage your back. If you engage your back you could very well pull a muscle. I teach you how to do these exercises safely and then monitor you to make sure that everything looks appropriate.
