How to Lose More Weight with Fitness Supplements

Sports nutrition supplement recommendations

There are so many fitness supplements on the market, and it can be confusing to know which ones to take—and when! My research and 20 years as a personal trainer proves that supplements do make a difference especially when you’re losing weight as part of a holistic fitness program.

Before I get into specific supplement recommendations, I’d like to point out that there is no substitute for a whole foods diet. Most of your nutrition should come from vegetables, lean meats, and other ingredients that pack a healthy punch. You can then use supplements to enhance your fitness further.

The goal of this supplement regimen is three-fold. Some of the supplements, like CLA will actually help your body burn fat. Other supplements, like the digestive enzymes with probiotics, improve your digestion so you can get the most nutrition from your food and eliminate waste appropriately. Finally, we have supplements like the BCAAs, which help your muscle recovery so you maintain your workout intensity.

So, here’s what I recommend taking, and when I recommend taking it:

Morning, Post-Workout

  • 1 scoop BCAAs

  • 1 scoop glutamine

Afternoon, With Lunch

  • Multivitamin

  • Omega 3s (Fish Oil)

  • 1,000 mg vitamin C

  • Digestive enzymes with probiotics

Before Bed

  • 1 scoop BCAAs

  • 1 scoop glutamine

  • 1,000 mg vitamin C

  • Digestive enzymes with probiotics

For the BCAAs, I recommend this one on Amazon. The fruit punch flavor is my favorite. You can also get your glutamine on Amazon here. Sometimes I’ll buy supplements in-person at GNC, but you’ll usually find a better price on Amazon.

One other supplement I recently learned about is conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Research suggests that CLA helps exercisers burn more body fat while preserving lean muscle mass. Humans can’t manufacture their own CLA, so it’s important we get it through grass-fed meats, dairy, and supplementation. This CLA powder from BPI Sports includes carnitine, a nutrient that helps the body use fat as fuel.

Again, weight loss supplements will not work as a standalone approach. You need to eat a healthy diet high in protein and vegetables. I also recommend doing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and weight lifting to burn more calories and increase your metabolism.
