From Fat to Fit: Progress! (A One-Month Update)
Many of my clients seek out personal training because they’re overweight. Christine is one of those clients, and over the next few months she’ll be sharing her progress with us. This post was originally published on May 7, 2013. I'm reposting it here because we've moved blogs.
I read many prednisone weight gain horror stories as I watched my weight balloon during the first few months of the year. Dozens of people claimed that they were unable to lose the weight even after going off the medication, which gave me a genuine fear that I would be forever locked in at 181 pounds.
However, as Andrea had to remind me several weeks in, this Fat to Fit thing isn’t an “experiment,” as I called it. Burning fat is a tried-and-true formula: eat less, workout more, and you’re sure to shed the weight.
Five weeks into my total body transformation, I can confidently say that Andrea’s program is working wonders, but not in the way you might expect.
For several weeks, I weighed myself first thing every morning only to see that the scale hadn’t budged a bit. I seemed stuck at 171 pounds—an improvement, but certainly far from where I wanted to be.
As it turns out, your weight isn’t always the best way to gauge your fitness. If you’re five to ten pounds overweight when you start a new workout plan, you might put on as much as five pounds in the beginning—all from muscle weight, not fat.
That’s why Andrea measures all of her clients at regular intervals. It’s a much more reliable way of tracking progress. I’m happy to report that, after being measured a second time this morning, I’m definitely slimming up. (I would post a picture but I’m having trouble taking a one of myself. Maybe next week.)
Here’s where I started and where I’m at now in inches:
Upper Waist: Was 32.5/Now 30.5
Lower Waist: Was 36.5/Now 34.5
Hips: Was 40/Now 39
Thighs: Was 25/Now 24
Biceps: Was 12.5/Now 11
Neck: Was 14/Now 13
Calves: Was 16.5/Now 15.5
So psyched to see progress! Although I have to say, I wasn’t too surprised by the measurements. Yesterday I tried on a shirt that didn’t fit a month ago, and I was pleased to find that I could wear it again. I’ve also gotten a lot of compliments from friends and family, who can tell I’m losing the fat, especially in my face. And I finally feel comfortable wearing dresses and skirts again because my legs and arms are getting toned like never before!
Of course, that’s just a few of the benefits of training with Andrea. I haven’t even touched on the fact that I’m able to carry more bags of groceries at once or how I’m able to run up hills in my neighborhood that left me winded walking just a few weeks ago. Keep reading for further updates!
