My Favorite Japanese Recipes (+ Videos of How to Make Each!)
I’m lucky enough to have several Japanese friends who have taught me their favorite Japanese recipes over the years. I love Japanese recipes because they are super healthy (assuming you are okay eating rice), but have a ton of flavor.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve posted a few of the recipes I’ve learned to make over on my YouTube channel. If you like these Japanese recipes for temaki (sushi hand rolls), miso soup, and rice balls, check out my recipes playlist for other suggestions for keeping your food fun but healthy.
I post to YouTube every Monday. Subscribe and click on the alerts button to get notified when new recipes and workouts are released!

Japanese Recipe: Temaki (Sushi Hand Rolls)
If you love sushi, you’ll dig these sushi hand rolls, known as temaki in Japan. My friend Rika walks you through every step, from making authentic Japanese sushi rice to cooking a Japanese omelet (the perfect filling for hand rolls).
Japanese Recipe: Miso Soup
This is a great recipe after a long day, when you don’t have the time for something more complex. I love the saltness of miso soup and how warming it is now that the weather is turning cooler.
For authentic Japanese ingredients, check out your local Japanese market. Here in San Diego I like shopping at Nijiya Market and Mitsuwa. More general Asian markets sometimes don’t have as wide of a selection of Japanese products.
Japanese Recipe: Onigiri (Rice Snack Balls)
I love this for a quick and easy snack. They’re great to send to school with your kids too! Start by cooking Japanese sushi rice accoridng to your favorite method (the first video, for hand rolls, goes in depth into how to make rice).
If you’re going to save your onigiri for later, I recommend wrapping them well in plastic wrap and storing them in the freezer so they don’t dry out.
