8 Benefits of Personal Training During Pregnancy

As a mama of 5, it’s no surprise that one of my specialties is pregnancy. A lot of women come to me after they have finished having babies because they want to lose weight and strengthen their pelvic floor muscles.

However, you don’t need to wait until then to start personal training. There are a lot of benefits to having a fit pregnancy!

1. Easier labor.

I’ve had several clients report that their work with me during pregnancy made labor so much easier. I focus a lot on core muscles, which are the critical muscles that push a baby out of the vaginal canal.

2. Faster recovery

It’s true of knee surgery and it’s true of pregnancy—if you go in with a strong body you will bounce back faster from the physical trauma.

3. Lower risk of gestational diabetes

Gestational diabetes can cause preterm labor and delivery complications, in addition to increasing the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes for both you and your baby. 30 to 45 minutes of exercise a day has been shown to reduce the risk of gestational diabetes in at risk women.

4. Lower risk of high blood pressure

Exercise (and resistance training in particular) have been shown to reduce the risk of preeclampsia or hypertension in pregnant women, according to several studies. I’ve worked out through most of my pregnancies, so I can help you find a routine that is comfortable for your changing body.

5. Better mood

Fetal exposure to stress hormones like cortisol can have a profound impact on your baby for years to come. Regular exercise during pregnancy may lower your stress levels while increasing positive brain chemicals.

6. More energy

Many women experience fatigue during pregnancy due to changing hormones and the energy that is needed to create new life. Exercise will help balance your energy levels, especially during the first trimester.

7. Lower fetal heart rate/higher heart rate variability

Your baby’s heart rate says a lot about his or her health. Exercise during pregnancy has been found to support a lower heart rate and increased heart rate variability in fetuses, a benefit that may impact your child’s health well into adulthood.

8. Easier to lose weight after pregnancy

Obviously, pregnancy isn’t the time to worry about losing weight. But you can maintain your muscle mass during pregnancy, which will make it easier to lose weight later on.
