Why Do I Focus on Strong Abs and Glutes?
I recently opened my own private training gym in Carlsbad, California. The funny thing is that when it came to choosing equipment, I went mostly with machines that target glutes and abs.
It’s not that you can’t do leg presses in my gym (I have an awesome way of rigging the Smith machine for that). It’s just not as much of a focus, and that’s true whether you’re trying to build muscle or lose weight.
Strong Glutes and Core Are the Foundation of All Movement
In my 20 years of personal training, if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that the glutes and core are the basis of every other movement. If you have strong glutes and abs, other exercises will be easier, safer, and more effective.
Strong Glutes and Core Support Your ADLs
You’ll also experience the most benefit in your activities of daily living (ADLs). You use your glutes and core every time you carry groceries and run after your kids. By strengthening these muscle groups, these ADLs will become infinitely easier, and you’ll be less likely to injure yourself doing them.
Strong Glutes and Core Make You Look Confident
Finally, glutes and abs have a tremendous impact on posture. I do a lot of should and back exercises with my clients to make them look stronger and more confident. However, these exercises aren’t effective at achieving that look if your mid-section isn’t strong.
