3 San Diego County Hikes for Your Spring Weekend

One of the things I love about living in San Marcos is that there are so many things to do with my family on the weekend. Lately, we’ve been busy with jiu-jitsu competitions, but you better believe the wildflowers and mountains of San Diego County are calling my name.

Whether you’re a San Diego native, new to the area, or just visiting for a few days, here are my top picks for hikes in the area.

Elfin Forest in Escondido, CA

Elfin Forest Hike Reservoir View Escondido

Elfin Forest is as delightful as the name implies. This large nature preserve features 11 miles of well-maintained trails in the eastern part of North County.

The main hike is about 1.5 miles, beginning at the visitor’s center and ending at a picnic area that overlooks a reservoir. The hike is uphill but doable, and there are a couple places where you can rest along the way.

About halfway up you’ll start getting expansive views of Harmony Grove and Escondido. Just keep and eye out for snakes!

Torrey Pines in La Jolla, CA

This state park is located right on the coast overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Several miles of trails wind through the bluffs, which are home to the endangered Torrey pine tree. The tree is only found here and on Santa Rosa Island.

You’ll need to pay a $10 fee to enter, but it’s well worth the views of the coastline. The park boasts 2,000 undeveloped acres, so it’s easy to forget you’re in the midst of a busy metropolis rather than in a remote beach location.

The trails are manicured so even regular running shoes are fine. Just make sure to bring some water and put on lots of sunblock.

Potato Chip Rock in Poway, CA

Potato Chip Rock Hiking in Poway CA

Snap a photo of each of your hiking buddies standing on this sliver of rock--it will look like a death-defying act. You’ll also enjoy views of Lake Poway and unique rock formations along the way.

Potato Chip Rock is located near the peak of Mt. Woodson, at the end of an 4-mile hike. Bring $8 for parking, water, and a hat (there is little shade on this hike).

These are just three of the breathtaking hikes that are located within driving distance of me in North County. Other great places to go hiking include Julian and Idyllwild.
